Just because you have oily skin, doesn’t mean you don’t need hydration! If you have oily skin, you want to make sure you do effective oil control but also keep skin hydrated without excess oil. So how do we keep away from oil free products yet not lose much natural oils on our face?

  1. A. Exfoliate with hydration

Exfoliation is more so a habitual step for oily skin. Just because it’s winter, it doesn’t mean your skin won’t need a good exfoliation. If you have oily skin, you’ll still want to controle excessive oil or remove a nice layer of excessive dead skin cells making skin flaky. But rather than jumping into your normal exfoliating scrub or chemical exfoliator, go a little more gentle and hydrating when winter hits.

Why sugar will be a great exfoliator for your oily skin in winter

  • – sugar, among other types of exfoliant, retains moisture on the skin making it a hydrating exfoliating ingredient.
  • – the natural glycolic acid in sugar helps condition and moisturize skin and protects skin from pollutants and toxins.
  • – dissolves easily with water and oil making it less irritating on the skin after exfoliation.
  • – can be used in multipurpose for effective cleansing and exfoliation.

  1. B. Watery toner with no viscosity that is highly refreshing

Thick or oily toner will be the last thing you would want on your skin right after you step out of the shower refreshed and clear skin. Adding the first layer of hydration after shower is crucial to prevent skin from becoming dehydrated (that can lead to even more secretion of natural oil). But when we have oily skin, we want to keep skincare as light as possible yet hydrating and refreshing. You can find answers to this by choosing a watery toner with no viscosity yet packed with hydrating ingredients like green tea and coconut water.

The qualities to check when choosing the toner for your oily skin in winter

  • – light and watery texture that will leave skin feeling refreshing and hydrating. (less viscocity, more refreshing)
  • – hydrating ingredients with calming & soothing properties: Green tea water, coconut water.
  • – fast absorption into the skin without leaving residue on the surface of the skin.
  • – easy to layer multiple times until skin feels hydrated within and on the surface.

  1. C. Serum: Hyaluronic acid packed soothing & cooling serum

For oily skin, serum might seem too much to add in the skincare routine. However, when it’s winter you would want to reconsider. As long as you stick with a light and soothing serum that will hydrate the skin from within, it will work great to balance oil and water level on the skin. If you don’t usually use serum in summer times, make sure you are comfortable with the texture of the serum as it is an added step into your routine. See if will not be a burden but rather a refreshing and soothing step that will help your oily yet somehow dry skin be hydrated and calm.

What makes a serum cooling & soothing ideal for oily skin?

  • – Hydrating ingredients such as : hyaluronic acid
  • – Calming & soothing ingredients such as: centella asiatica extract
  • – Texture that leaves skin with a cooling & refreshing feeling

  1. D. Cream: Moisturize without oil

If your skin feels hydrated enough you can even skip the moisturizer step, however, when the wind gets colder and the room becomes drier, you will want to make sure all the previous hydrants delivered to your skin be secure and locked into the skin. Do this with a moisturizer that has great oil and water balance and that has a texture of either a gel or a thin paste of cream. Rather than slathering the cream all over your face, focus on applying it onto specific areas that feels dry or apply a thin layer evenly all over the face.
