Struggling with blackheads? No idea how to handle them? Lucky for you our Picky Expert @theskinsciencegirl has some tips and info that can help you deal with blackheads. Let’s get into it!
What are Blackheads?
Blackheads are non-inflammatory comedones that are open at the surface of the skin. When the skin produces sebum and it becomes trapped along with dead skin cells in your pores, it can cause them to clog. And since these are open at the surface of the skin, it allows the dirt and debris inside your pores to oxidize and gives it that black color.
Now that we know what it is and how it can form, how can we prevent it? Here are some things you can do to help:
- ✓ Try to keep oil/sebum production in check
- ✓ Exfoliate with BHA (beta hydroxy acid) to shed those dead skin cells before they clog up your pores!
- ✓ Additionally, ingredients like retinoids and azelaic acid can help too
Treating Existing Blackheads
Start off your routine with double cleansing! Oil cleansers can help dissolve oil clogging up your pores and helps to keep them clean. Use exfoliators with salicylic acid at night (1-2 times a week) because salicylic acid can help loosen the dead skin and sebum in your pores. Adding these two steps to your night time routine can help effectively remove pore clogging residue and treat blackheads.
Careful with those pore strips! It may make you feel like it’s de-gunking your pores, but in reality it’s only removing the superficial tips of the blackhead. The root of the issue still remains in your pores! In addition, these strips can heavily irritate your pores. So we recommend caution when it comes to pore strips.
Don’t Give Up!
Keep it up and don’t give up! Consistency is key when it comes to healthy skin, so make sure to stick with these tips to help treat blackheads. You won’t see them disappear overnight, but that’s no reason to stop!
