What is sugar waxing?

There are a variety of ways that we can remove unwanted hair. Some of the most common are shaving, which is convenient, but leaves a stubbly, bumpy feeling, and waxing, which can lead to ingrown hairs and irritated skin if performed wrong. But, a lesser known method is sugar waxing, also known as body sugaring. Dating back to early Egypt, this method has boomed in modern culture as a popular form of hair removal.

Basically, it’s just like its name. Sugar waxing involves the use of a wax-like paste made from sugar, and a few other ingredients, which is slightly warmed and applied against the grain of the skin, and removed with the natural direction of hair growth, in short, flicking motions. Better yet, it can be easily done at home with a simple DIY sugar wax recipe!

What are the benefits of sugar waxing?
While much like waxing, sugaring employs sticky substances to physically adhere to and take off the skin, sugaring is much better in that as mentioned earlier, it is applied against and removed with the direction of hair growth, whereas waxing does the opposite, which can lead to unnecessary irritation to the skin, or even break hairs, causing ingrowns.

Another major benefit of sugaring is that it doesn’t contain the preservatives, chemicals and adhesives that wax contains, making it safer for all skin types. This also prevents it from sticking to live skin cells, only sticking to hair follicles, reducing pain with removal, and burning or scabbing.
HACK 1: DIY Sugar Wax Reciep
When you’re met with unwanted hair and you want to say goodbye, just use this easy DIY sugar wax recipe to sugar at home! All you need is:

  • hot water (50ml)
  • sugar (400g)
  • lemon juice (50ml)
  • salt (1 spoon)

How to make: Just mix them in a pot, boil it for 5-7 minutes until a syrupy amber color, and let cool for 10. You should have a malleable ball of sugar that you can use to wax!

+Extra tip post sugar waxing: Apply a gentle calming cream to soothe the area after sugaring. While it is more gentle on the skin than waxing, you may still experience redness and irritation for a few minutes after.

HACK 2: Sugar Exfoliating
Aside from waxing, you can also use sweet sugar to exfoliate! Just like there’s a DIY sugar wax recipe, there’s a way you can make your own sugar exfoliator at home! Just prepare sugar, honey and hot water in a 2:1:1 ratio, and blend the mixture so that the particles are a smaller size that won’t irritate the skin. Simply massage on a damp face for softer, moisturized skin.

But, if it’s too much of a hassle to make!
If you don’t have these ingredients at home, or you simply don’t have time, you can also use premade scrubs to exfoliate the face and body.

: Contains black sugar, and other natural ingredients like shea butter, cranberry seed oil and more, to not only exfoliate, but also hydrate and nourish the skin.
