Sulfur vs Tea Tree Oil: Why Sulfur Won Over Our Heart This Time

by Wendy Kim on Feb 11, 2020

Whenever we talk about the top ingredients to cure acne, there are two ingredients that never miss a spot on the list - 'tea tree oil' and 'sulfur'. If you have been struggling with acne for a while, you would be very much familiar with both the ingredients and even have a clear idea which works better on your skin. However, if you are new to acne treatment or skincare ingredients in general, 'sulfur' might come across less familiar compared to 'tea tree oil'. So, what's the difference and why did By Wishtrend decide to go with sulfur to help you treat acne? So, here goes sulfur vs tea tree oi. sulfur vs tea tree oil cover image2First, the commonalityTea tree oil and sulfur are two very separate ingredients with different way of collection, formulation, and the way it works and feels on the skin are very different. However, both ingredients have proved its fame for decades now as the effective acne curer. It is all thanks to the following properties that are commonly found among ingredients that are proclaimed to be effective in acne cure and prevention.

Both "Sulfur" and "tea tree oil"...

  • - are Antibacterial
  • - are Antiinflammation
  • - are Antifungal
  • - & emit a unique smell

Now, the difference

Now that we know both have what it takes to treat acne, let's explore the difference. The preference between the ingredients, just like for any other ingredients or skincare products, will depend on 1) the type of acne you have, 2) your skin type, 3) your preference of formulation, and 4) how your skin reacts to the ingredient. And once you understand the nature of these two different ingredients and go through trials, you'll find the one that will work and feel better on the skin.

A. Collodial Sulfur

[Note] Sulfur is optimized for those...

- who struggle with excessive oil and sebum all year long
  • - who has combination skin with oily t-zone, cheeks, chin and forehead
  • - who seeks for quick overnight acne cure
- who wishes to restrain further pus accumulation in pores during the beginning phase of acne formation
  • - who prefers a spot treatment to target specific acne spots or oily areas on the skin
[Benefits] Sulfur is a natural mineral that emits a yellow hue. With its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, it aids to clear bacteria off from the pores and also prevent new form of bacteria maniesfesting on the skin's surface. Sulfur is also known to be effective in reducing the production of excessive sebum on the skin - which are one of the causes behind breakouts and whiteheads. In addition to antibacterial and oil controlling properties, it also is kinown to work as a natural exfoliant yet less harsh on the skin comapred to physical exfoliators. So all in all, it is great news to those who struggled with acne and sebum. Sulfur is most commonly found in the form of a wash-off mask or as moisturizers considering the nature of how it benefits the skin. [Be aware] If you have been to hot springs or volcanic areas (or even a sauna), you would be familiar with the scent. Sulfur emits a unique scent that some love or some might dislike. And as much as it cures and controls acne and sebum in the fastest way, it can leave parts of the skin dry.

So, why sulfur this time?

To help with fast acne cure and to minimize the drawbacks of the sulfur, By Wishtrend decided to come up with their sulfur cream of their own. Not only because sulfur is effective in acne cure, but it is designed to help you with quick overnight acne cure and further control excessive oil production with less irritation. For all of you who struggle with braekouts from time to time, or who were looking for that one acne treatment that works and works fast - Sulfur 3% Clean Gel will probably be the staple on your vanity (Read details on the By Wishtrend Sulfur 3% Clean Gel here)

B. Tea Tree Oil

[Note] Tea tree oil is optimized for those...

- who struggle with acne but have extremely dry skin
  • - who doesn't have a problem adding essential oil in their skincare regimen
  • - who enjoy the herbal medicinal scent
- who seek to target the deeper layer of the skin
  • - who prefer acne treatment for wider areas on the skin
[Benefits] Tea tree oil is one of the few essential oils that can be applied directly onto the skin. It is a fragrant essential oil derived from tea tree, obtained from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant which is native to Australia. The oil emits a clear yellow hue and a very herbal and medicinal odor. This oil has long been an effective acne treatment for many thanks to its antibacterial and skin irritation calming properties. Tea tree oil is served as the oil itself in a bottle or can be found in other different products like creams, cleansers and even in hair care products. [Be aware] There are different causes to acne. Some are bacterial and some or hormonal and some are due to excessive sebum trapped in the pores. Though tea tree oil can be effective in treating and calming acne prone skin through antibacterial properties, it might not be your all-round, all-mighty treatment for acne caused due to excessive sebum or over-active sebaceous glands. And let's not forget that it is an essential oil. If your skin sensitively reacts to oil or if you are completely new to adding oil in your routine, make sure to take a cautionary step. There are different ways to test it out before you fully incorporate in your routine but test it out on the back of your ears or on small portion of the skin.
